History of the PRINCE GEORGE’S
COUNTY MARYLAND CHAPTER
The
Continental Societies, Inc. is a public service
organization dedicated to the socio-economic and cultural
welfare of underprivileged children and youth. It was organized
in 1956, incorporated nationally in 1972, and now embraces over
40 chapters in various states, the District of Columbia and
Bermuda. Through outreach in five programmatic areas of health,
education, employment, recreation, and arts/humanities,
Continental women everywhere strive to adhere to the
humanitarian precept of sharing with those in need, especially
children.
Nationally, the organization was cited in
2006, for its fifty years of service to youth, by many members
of the United States Senate, the House of Representatives, as
well as several State Governors and City Mayors, including those
from the East Coast States of Maryland, Virginia, Florida,
Delaware, South Carolina, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina,
and Georgia, in addition to the District of Columbia.
Locally, the
Prince George's County Chapter has received several
public service citations from the Governor of Maryland, and the
Prince George's County Board of Education for its sustained work
with the children of Maryland. The chapter was awarded a grant
recently by the National Harbor Community Outreach Program in
support of its humanitarian activities.
Continentals now offer selected
scholarships. Interested high school students may contact us for
further information.
The concept of a
Prince George's County Chapter of the Continental Societies,
Inc. originated with Mrs. Willie Mae Gaston-Ferguson, chapter
organizer. Her desire was tremendously influenced by a long time
girl friend, the late Janel Ratteray, who had been a very active
member of the Bermuda Chapter. m 1998, Mrs. Ferguson contacted
Mrs. Madeline Campbell, Chairperson of the National Membership
Committee, Continental Societies, mc. and member of the
Baltimore Chapter, regarding establishing a chapter in the
county. After completing the rigorous installation process, the
chartering ceremony for the Prince George's County Chapter was
held on March 20, 1999. Since that time, membership has
continued to flourish and an exceptional array of programs has
been provided throughout the county.
The chapter raises most of its funds to
support local children and youth through an annual fundraising
event: Continentals Care 5K Walk for
Children. The walk provides an opportunity for
public schools, and other youth service organizations, to raise
funds for special programs. Your support of this fundraiser is
greatly appreciated.
